Review:
Transformers established themselves with a 1980s TV series and a feature film.
After that, the Transformers franchise made its way into Michael Bay’s hands in 2007.
Bay’s signature directing style is on full display. This film has vibrant colors, fast-paced action, and explosions galore.
As a whole, this film's human characters and story are rather basic. Despite this, Transformers’ CGI and visual effects are worthy of praise.
Sound design is also worthy of compliment in this film.
Take any scene where an Autobot or Decepticon transforms. Viewers will be able to hear each component joining together.
This film is also complemented by Steve Jablonsky’s bombastic, entertaining musical score.
Each of the above elements is a positive. Despite that, the characters and story are hollow in comparison.
To be clear, Shia LaBeouf is a capable actor in this film and reacts well to the action sequences.
Megan Fox joins the cast, portraying Sam’s eventual love interest, Mikaela Banes. Although she has a clear physical attractiveness, her acting is average at best.
Other cast members include Josh Duhamel as Captain Lennox and Tyrese Gibson as Sgt Epps.
Both actors give serviceable performances, displayed during several major action sequences.
This is also admirable, considering that they are reacting to objects designed through visual effects.
Most eagle-eyed fans of the 1980s cartoon series or film will notice the return of one major voice actor.
In Transformers’ case, Peter Cullen reprised his role, voicing the Autobot leader, Optimus Prime.
His voice is a commanding presence, carrying an aura of wisdom whenever he speaks.
Also, making his presence known is Hugo Weaving from The Matrix fame. For context, he voices the Decepticon leader, Megatron.
Veteran voice talent Frank Welker doesn’t make his return from the 80s cartoon series. Despite his absence, Hugo is more than a capable replacement.
Conclusion:
In summary, Transformers is a visual achievement that can be exciting to watch.
It also has an energetic soundtrack by Steve Jablonsky. This makes Michael Bay’s bombastic action and visuals stand out.
This movie’s human characters and their story are less interesting. Despite this, they’re by no means offputting.
For action movies or Transformers fans, this one is a solid recommendation.
