Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) Movie Review

Synopsis:

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) attempts to balance his high school life while being a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. When a new threat called the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges, Peter must put his skills to the test. He must also face challenges brought upon him by his superhero mentor, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.).

Review:

Tom Holland's Spider-Man had a successful debut in Captain America: Civil War (2016). With it, audiences awaited a continuation of his story.

As with most Spider-Man solo films, Homecoming begins with Peter Parker’s high school life.

With this, audiences get introduced to his best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon). From there on, the film presents a lighthearted tone.

Often, this tone fits the carefree nature of being in a high school environment.

It is also evident that both Holland and Batalon have good chemistry. As a result, their characters’ interactions are also good.

There are moments, though, where the humor is unnecessary. As a result, these scenes can present a negative impact on the story’s progression.

One other element of the film that has a similar problem is Peter’s crush on a high school girl, Liz (Laura Harrier).

As a whole, both Tom and Laura are decent with their material. Despite this, their characters have little connection to each other.

This may have been because both actors don’t share many scenes in the movie together. Also, this film’s action scenes lack consistency.

Although they have a good sense of movement, the impact and stakes of them are lacking.

While Spider-Man’s acrobatics are competent in motion, they feel weightless over time.

It is not until the movie’s conclusion that the action becomes more creative.

An aspect of this movie that does work, though, is the addition of Vulture (Michael Keaton).

What makes this character work are his motivations and how Keaton portrays them.

His scenes also bring some extra tension to the experience. These are evident during the scenes with Tom’s Peter.

As per usual, Downey Jr. as Tony Stark is the highlight once again. He serves a mentor role in this film, bringing his usual witty charm to the character.

These qualities are also evident in his scenes with Holland. As expected, both actors interact with each other well.

Conclusion:

To conclude, this film is a fun outing for the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).

Spider-Man Homecoming is an above-average recommendation for Spider-Man fans.

This is regardless of some weightless action sequences and hit-or-miss comedy.
