Review:
Joining Marvel Studios’ ever-expanding universe of characters was Doctor Strange.
As with Downey Jr.’s performance as Tony Stark, Cumberbatch fits the role of Doctor Strange well.
What is almost identical to Iron Man (2008) is how the structure of the film’s story.
In contrast to that film, though, the pacing and narrative aren’t as consistent.
Furthermore, its protagonist isn’t as relatable because he's a narcissist at first.
Doctor Strange's narrative is well-structured as a whole. It falters due to the primary antagonists’ weak motivations and some out-of-place comedy.
As indicated above, Doctor Strange is often portrayed as being narcissistic.
Tony Stark, whilst similar in this respect, is at least portrayed with charm and energy.
It is not until the film’s conclusion that Strange becomes a hero worth rooting for.
Antagonists are one of Marvel Studios’ points of inconsistency with their films. Kaecilius doesn't have many discernable traits, nor a very good motivation.
These are qualities that can often define an antagonist. In this instance, they're undeveloped and rushed.
Yet another underused character is Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams).
There is not much worth mentioning here. This is other than that McAdams’ talents are somewhat wasted.
In this movie, Christine is Stephen Strange's minor love interest.
If there were more scenes with them both or a flashback, it would’ve provided some much-needed context.
Doctor Strange has good character additions, such as The Ancient One.
This is despite its problems with the main antagonist's motivations and love interest.
Portrayed by Tilda Swinton, her character deviates from the comic version. Despite this, she's still portrayed with wisdom and grace.
There are also scenes between her and Stephen that offer some meaningful development. One of this film’s positives is the visual effects.
From its opening action sequence, magic and sorcery are on display. This is often done in imaginative ways.
Examples of these are entire cities turned upside down or the use of magical weapons.
Action scenes are also given similar creativity and flair. They also have fast and sharp choreography.
Conclusion:
Altogether, Doctor Strange is a solid introduction to a magical world. Its action and visuals are the notable highlights.
Tilda as The Ancient One is also given time to shine. In this film, she puts a different, unique spin on her comic-book counterpart.
Doctor Strange acts as an interesting addition to the MCU and opens up many possibilities for future installments.
